![]() In 1988 the International Committee for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) published a paper on guidance in to the investigation of inflammatory conditions (1). International Committee for Standardization in Haematology. This article aims to see why a test which has evidence based superiority over another test is failing to become established as the primary screening test for inflammation and to give evidence that the reasons have been overcome. Outside of the United Kingdom (UK) it appears to be hardly used at all. In spite of numerous peer reviewed articles indicating its superiority to the Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), there is a low incidence of plasma viscosity requesting. Clinically it is used to investigate inflammation and malignancy of the immune system (Myeloma, Macroglobulinaemia etc.). Plasma Viscosity measurement is a nonspecific sensitive marker of changes in plasma protein levels.
